Tambuyog Development Center
Country: The Philippines
Project: The Shrimp Welfare and Protection
Tambuyog Development Center (TDC) is a Philippines-based development organisation working with partners to strengthen responsible aquaculture. Rising demand for fish and shrimp in Southeast Asia is pushing rapid aquaculture expansion, often linked to social harm, environmental pollution, and weak attention to the welfare of farmed shrimp and other aquatic animals. Together with World Animal Protection, TDC leads the Shrimp Welfare and Protection Project to address these gaps at the production stage and in public awareness.
TDC aims to embed shrimp welfare into policies, industry practice, and market standards, including certification schemes that guide responsible farming. The project has delivered stakeholder awareness activities, national research on shrimp welfare policies and standards, and a pilot farm demonstrating practical welfare measures. Building on this, TDC helped integrate welfare into the Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative Shrimp Protocol and contributes expert input to government and industry technical groups
