Farmed Animal Network Southeast Asia (FANSEA)

Industrial farming, also known as factory farming, has expanded rapidly over the past 90 years, largely driven by industry practices that prioritise scale and efficiency. This system often reduces animals to commodities and overlooks their capacity to feel pain and stress, as well as positive emotions like pleasure and joy.

FANSEA, established under World Animal Protection’s Investing in Others initiative, brings together grassroots organisations across Southeast Asia to advance farmed animal welfare, strengthen high-welfare animal production, and drive change in the food systems throughout the region. Our vision is clear: improve the lives of farmed animals, support resilient food systems, and build a better world for animals, people, and the planet.

Investing in Others

Since 2021, Investing in Others is a regranting program that has supported 15 grantees across Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Through financial and technical assistance, World Animal Protection supports grassroots organisations to strengthen their capacity to improve farmed animal welfare and influence broader food systems change, including shifts away from factory farming and towards diets within planetary and social boundaries.

With generous financial support from Coefficient Giving and the Dutch Postcode Lottery, World Animal Protection and our grantee work together to improve the lives of chickens, pigs, cows, fish, and shrimp by:

• Working with food businesses to end cruel practices such as overcrowding, barren environments, and painful mutilations
• Piloting and scaling high-welfare farming models
• Advancing government policies that improve animal welfare, reduce factory farming, or support dietary shifts
• Empowering consumers to demand higher-welfare animal products and plant-based alternatives
• Supporting system-based approaches to transform food systems by 2030
