Patom Organic Living for the Welfare of Chickens in Thailand

Country: Thailand

Project: Healthier Chicken Thailand

Patom uses traditional wisdom to create products under our concept of Organic Living.  Raw materials are sourced from local organic farmers supported by the Sookjai Foundation. We connect with over 200 local organic farmers to grow for us. Sookjai Foundation acts as a link to the farmers to ensure organic standard, quality and traceability.  Patom’s role in this project is to raise awareness on high welfare farm animals with communities and business partners in Bangkok who are interested in wellness and sustainability.

The main challenge is not the farming system, as we have well-established model farms that provide detailed guidance. The key issue lies in the market. High-welfare chicken is priced higher than conventional chicken, and some farms in our network have not yet entered the organic system. As a result, the higher price may lead both B2B and B2C buyers to hesitate.

At present, we have successfully expanded our network from one farm to nine farms. The next step is to advocate for the inclusion of Animal High Welfare principles within the PGS Standard, supporting the transition toward organic certification and encouraging other farmers interested in high-welfare poultry farming.
